Our World

Caring for our World

Wendy’s/Arby’s Group® believes our business operations and the natural world are closely linked. We are working to make the world a better place by reducing our impact on the environment.

Environmental Initiativesstewards

We are working to be good stewards of the environment. We carry these efforts out in our restaurants, regional offices, restaurant support centers and Atlanta headquarters.  We work closely with our vendors to purchase products and services with a view toward energy efficiency and environmental impact.

Below are just a few of the many measures we are taking to improve our environmental efforts.

Energy Management

We strive to become best-in-class in the way we purchase and use energy in an effort to reduce costs and lower consumption of energy sources that cause greenhouse gas emissions.

  • Both Wendy's® and Arby's® consider energy efficiency in the selection of all equipment, goods and services.
  • Wendy’s has implemented an energy management program in its company-owned restaurants which has significantly reduced overall energy consumption.
  • Both Wendy's and Arby's are converting to more efficient lighting when appropriate (e.g. LED and compact fluorescent lighting.
  • We encourage ongoing energy conservation by all employees.
  • We work with suppliers to further develop and invest in innovated energy technologies.
  • We engage governmental agencies and utility companies to develop effective energy productivity incentives.
  • We support national and regional energy policy and climate change activities that are aligned with overall corporate objectives.

Restaurants

  • Wendy’s is a member of the US Green Building Council.  The brand is evaluating Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification options as part of its development strategy.
  • Arby’s opened its first green restaurant in Magnolia, Texas and is pursuing LEED certification from the U.S. Green Building Council for the site.
  • Both Wendy's and Arby's recycle cooking oil and cardboard in company-operated restaurants.
  • We use cleaning products in our restaurants that are considered environmentally-friendly.

Packaging

  • Wendy's napkins are biodegradable, chlorine-free and made of 95% recycled content.
  • Both Wendy's and Arby's seek to reduce packaging size where possible.
  • Both Wendy's and Arby's are currently reviewing several environmentally friendly packaging options.

Other

  • In 2009, we implemented electronic distribution of our Annual Report and Proxy materials to stockholders which significantly reduced the amount of printed materials.
  • Restaurant support centers have recycling programs for paper and other products.

In addition to these initiatives, we continue to investigate additional ways to sustain and enhance our commitment to be a good neighbor and a responsible corporate citizen.
